SMSF service provider Heffron has developed a foundations course designed to quickly upskill employees new to superannuation and SMSFs.

The CPD-certified short course is aimed at both accountants and financial advisers with little experience with superannuation and SMSFs.

The course is also appropriate for trainee paraplanners requiring introductory level knowledge about super or SMSFs and lawyers new to the SMSF space.

Heffron explained that the course helps those new to superannuation and SMSFs recognise and understand the language of superannuation.

After completing the course, Heffron said trainee paraplanners will be able to read an SOA covering super or SMSF issues and have an understanding or why the adviser is recommending a particular course of action.

“Business services accountants will be able to identify opportunities for clients or problem areas which may need to be investigated further,” it said.

“Auditors will get an understanding of the ‘bigger picture’ and the foundational super law compliance issues they’ll be auditing.”

The Super Foundations course is available both on demand and as a live webinar. Heffron will be holding intensive webinars with a live presenter on 9 and 16 March.

Speaking to SMSF Adviser last year, Heffron managing director Meg Heffron said that Heffron also has plans to reach some of the other people working in the SMSF space aside from accountants and advisers, such as support staff handling client phone calls.

“They also need to understand some of the language,” said Ms Heffron.

“We want to start with new graduates who want to become planners or accountants and learn more about super but then expand into providing services for support staff for business so that they can be a better support to accountants or planners.”
