The SMSF Adviser podcast has covered everything from technology to longevity this year and listeners have followed along in record numbers. Host Keith Ford and SMSF adviser Aaron Dunn of Smarter SMSF were joined by a variety of independent experts to discuss the ins and outs of compliance, regulations and lifestyle.   1. The rise of the Millennial trustee

Greg Hansen, executive for group strategy at HUB24, and Jo Hurley, general manager of Growth at Class, spoke about Millennials entering the SMSF space.

Mr Hansen and Ms Hurley explained what is causing the expansion of the SMSF sector and how technological advancements enable customised SMSF service offerings for Millennials.

The pair also covered how advisory firms are adapting their practices to effectively serve the evolving demands and expectations of clients.

Finally, Mr Hansen and Ms Hurley highlighted what advisers and accountants need to think about when engaging with a younger demographic to cater to their specific needs and preferences.

  1. What SMSFs need to know about crypto compliance

CEO at CryptoTaxCalculator, Shane Brunette, and tax counsel for CryptoTaxCalculator and director of Cadena Legal, Harrison Dell, spoke about taxation and compliance considerations when investing in crypto through an SMSF.

Mr Brunette and Mr Dell explained the key strategies and considerations essential for individuals and entities to master the complexities of capital gains tax and how to ensure compliance with the sole purpose test.

The pair also covered why the security of crypto assets is important for tax purposes and how to master crypto security including fundamental principles, wallets, and private key aspects.

  1. What’s next for the $3 million threshold?

SMSF Association head of policy and advocacy, Tracey Scotchbrook, and superannuation and financial services leader at CA ANZ, Tony Negline, shared the latest insights about the proposed $3 million threshold for members with large balances.

They discussed why an alternative model might result in fairer outcomes for members and also outlined some of the aspects yet to be addressed with the design of the policy so far, the reaction from the accounting profession, and the risk of the calculation methodology being adopted for other types of entities.

Simon Aboud, chief product and marketing officer at Allianz Retire+, spoke about retirement income solutions, explained why longevity risk is such a concern for retirees and advisers, and how Allianz Guaranteed Income for Life (AGILE) can help mitigate these issues.

He also highlighted how macroeconomic themes are affecting retirees and what to expect from the retirement income landscape over the next 12 months.

Andrew McVeigh, managing partner at Remara, discussed private credit and explained the ins and outs of private credit, including what SMSF members need to know and how the asset class can bring value to a member’s portfolio.
