SMSFA vice-chair Robin Bowerman, who is currently head of corporate affairs for investment manager Vanguard, will assume the chair role immediately, the association said.

Cavendish Superannuation founder Andrew Hamilton, who is also on the association’s board, will be elevated to the role of vice-chair.

The association added that in addition to stepping down from her role as chair on 27 September when the government’s retirement review panel was announced, Dr Ralston would also step down as a board member of the SMSFA.

Commenting on his appointment, Mr Bowerman said he would have big shoes to fill in succeeding Dr Ralston.

“I am very honoured that my fellow directors have asked me to succeed Deborah as chair,” he said.

“Although we are all greatly disappointed at losing Deborah before the end of her term, we totally appreciate why she has chosen to resign and wish her all the best in this new, important role.

“She has provided the association with sound leadership at a difficult time for the industry, and I know I speak for all members when I say her contribution has been greatly valued.”

Dr Ralston said she felt obligated to resign from her position to ensure the integrity of the retirement inquiry.

“It has been a privilege to work with my fellow directors, the executive and the members, all of whom are dedicated to ensuring Australians enjoy a secure retirement,” Dr Ralston said.

Sad to see Deborah go but she has the knowledge and experience to do great work in the inquiry into retirement systems.
