ATO updates SMSF self-education products

The ATO has updated its publications and online education modules to help trustees navigate the various stages of their SMSF lifecycles.

The publications and online education modules contain key points on what trustees need to know when starting, running or winding up their SMSF and form a suite of education products to support trustees with their regulatory and reporting obligations.

The ATO publications can be used as a reference tool while the online education modules are interactive and provide an excellent opportunity for trustees to build their knowledge.

The education modules also allow trustees to create an account and set up a personalised learning pathway, which will also record course completion.

The Starting a self-managed super fund publication and Setting up a self-managed super fund online education module helps trustees consider if an SMSF is right for them.

They include:

  • What is an SMSF?
  • Choosing a structure
  • An outline of your obligations
  • Registering your SMSF
  • Getting professional advice

The content in the publication and the education module can also be found in thinking about self-managed super and setting up.

Running a self-managed super fund helps trustees understand their role and obligations to help manage their fund effectively.

It includes:

  • Accepting contributions and rollovers
  • Managing your fund’s investments
  • Paying super benefits
  • Reporting and administration

The content in the publication and upcoming education module can be found in contributions and rollovers, investing, paying benefits and administering and reporting.

The Winding up a self-managed super fund publication and Winding up a self-managed super fund education module help trustees prepare for when they decide to wind up their SMSF.

They include:

  • Common situations where you may consider winding up
  • Preparing an exit plan
  • How to correctly wind up an SMSF
  • Getting professional advice.

The SMSF online education modules can also be easily accessed from the small business education portal.
