For SMSF trustees, the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) said, the framework outlines how it aims to respond with empathy, communicate clearly, and connect people with the right support while acknowledging the different roles people may have when engaging with the tax department.

The regulator said the framework highlights its commitment to improving how it supports SMSF trustees with their tax and super obligations.

The framework was shaped through public consultation, with valuable input from individuals, tax professionals, partners and advocates, and recognises that anyone can experience vulnerability at any time.

It also provides transparency about the ATO’s role and how it is embedding these principles across its services.

To help people understand what support is available, the ATO has published new web content.

This includes:

  • The full framework and an easy read summary.
  • Examples and information about current support options.
  • Information about how the ATO is implementing the framework and building its capability.
