Former ATO officer and SMSF industry veteran Tim Miller has joined SMSF administrator SuperGuardian as the group’s new education manager.

Mr Miller, who has run his own SMSF education consultancy since 2015, also previously held a number of education and technical services roles at South Australia-based SMSF consultancy Cavendish Superannuation from 1999–2015.

Prior to this, he was an administrative services officer for the ATO’s superannuation business line for almost a decade.

In a statement announcing Mr Miller’s appointment, SuperGuardian chief operating officer Joshua Williams commented that his unique experience when it came to SMSF education would add greatly to the group’s skill base in a changing financial services ecosystem.

“Tim has a practical and personal approach to SMSF education,” the group said.

“In a FASEA-led, post-royal commission landscape, his role will enable SuperGuardian to promote financial literacy around SMSFs and meet a growing need for specialist education in the broader SMSF community.”

Commenting on his appointment, Mr Miller told SMSF Adviser the chance to educate trustees directly, as well as continue his work informing the financial advice community on the latest SMSF strategies, was what appealed to him about the new role.

“The opportunity to be able to influence the trustee education space was a big thing for me because I’ve always been a huge advocate of trustee education,” Mr Miller said.

“Being out on my own for a while and doing a mix of consulting and educating, I’ve found that educating has always been my preferred line of work, so being able to live and breathe that was also a selling point.”

Mr Miller added that aside from trustee education, he would also be responsible for both internal staff training and keeping advisers up to date and compliant with SMSF knowledge in his new position.
